Last night, a company called "MB XL Entertainment" passed a fraudulent check for $34.95 on my account. It wasn't a debit card transaction - it was an electronically-generated paper check. They used a totally random six-digit check number, and printed my address from 3+ years ago on it. I have absolutely no idea how they obtained my information, but the same company passed a check on my coworker's account. Hers was $39.99. I googled the name and found numerous postings from people stating the same general scenario - fake check run through for $35-$40. I went straight to the bank and closed my account. Luckily, I caught it so quickly that they were able to bounce it back, and the money has already been credited to my account. My friend didn't catch it for a little while and she had to sign an affidavit and file a formal dispute. Of course, she got her money back too.

Naturally, tomorrow is payday, and we have direct deposit. The bank manager is going to manually transfer the money into my new account, but she said it is likely to be Monday or Tuesday before I have full access to my money. Also naturally, rent is due this weekend, and I had several debits scheduled to go through. I was able to cancel all the debits except for my ONG payment, which the bank manager is also going to manually transfer. And my landlady was very understanding when I told her it would be a few days before she got her check.

What pissed me off the most, though, is that I just got a brand new box of checks (which tends to last me about a year) less than a week ago. I was so happy to get them...the design is so cute, and they had my new name on them, and I was just generally looking forward to using them. I didn't get to use a single one. But I called Checks in the Mail and explained the situation, and they are replacing the checks at no charge. I was very impressed by that.

I have an account with Arvest, and my friend uses BOK. She said that the person at BOK gave her the impression they'd had numerous complaints; meanwhile, I was apparently the first person to report it to the person I spoke to at my bank. I made sure to let them know that I knew someone else personally that was hit and she promised to notify their "Risk Management" department.

I will be filing a complaint with the Attorney General as well as the FTC. Meanwhile, I advise all of you to be diligent, and I hope it doesn't happen to you!

Did you or anyone you know purchase any item containing diamonds (or any loose stones) between 1/1/94 and 3/31/06? If so, you need to go here.

shamelessly stolen from tulsatime, with a few modifications of my own.

South Dakota has banned abortion. It's being taken to court by Planned Parenthood.

9 more states have similar legislation pending.

And now this...

HB 2884 paassed out of committee Monday night. It is authored by Representative Thad Balkman of Norman. It has the following language:

No pharmacist, nor any agent or employee of a pharmacist:
1) Shall be prohibited from refusing to provide contraceptive procedures, supplies, and information when refusal is based upon religious or concientious objection:

This language if passed into law will allow pharmacists to refuse to fill prescriptions for birth control if they so choose. If they are the only pharmacist in town....women are just out of luck. It is clear that they plan to prevent women from using birth control if they can.

more...Collapse )

If you have the opportunity, go fill your car (and every gas can you can find) NOW. QuikTrip is apparently going to raise their price thirty cents at noon.

Bren and I recently obtained free copies of our credit reports in accordance with the new law. Go to the annual credit report site for more info. Anyway, on my report I noticed that Capital One Bank has pulled my credit thirty-one times since 6/3/03. They do this in order to offer me a "preapproved" credit card, even though the applications I ultimately receive in the mail tell me that I may not actually be approved if my credit sucks (which it does). After getting frustrated at trying to reach a human at Experian, I dug around on their website and found this:

1-888-5-OPTOUT

Calling this number allows you to opt out of all "prescreened" offers for credit and insurance. The recording mentioned a website:

http://www.optoutprescreen.com

This process took less than two minutes and I got the following message:

Thank you. Your Permanent Opt-Out Request has been received. Your request will be completed within 5 days. However, because your name has been provided to businesses that have not yet mailed their pre-approved offer to you, you may continue to receive certain pre-approved offers for several months.

While your name will be removed from the pre-approved credit or insurance offer lists that Equifax, Experian, Innovis and TransUnion provide to businesses, you may continue to receive mail from sources that do not use credit reporting companies to compile their lists.

YES!! I realize it will take a while, but ultimately I should get a lot less junk mail!

EDIT: FYI, I skipped the phone number field and it still took my request. The credit bureaus do not currently have my phone number (I only have a cell) and I'm going to keep it that way as long as possible!
